As with all new medical technologies, the Zimmer NexGen knee replacements were meant to revolutionize the knee replacement industry. With little to no FDA review they were rushed to market with the hopes of offering previously undreamed-of levels of mobility to the thousands of people suffering from decreased range of motion and chronic pain due to deterioration of their knees. Zimmer orthotics’ NexGen knee replacements offered hope to everyone from young athletes to people just hoping to regain their independence. The devices were touted as offering increased range of motion, increased stability, and even needed less surgery than past generations of knee replacements. However, the products were rushed to market with inadequate human testing and soon patients began to develop complications that lead to pain, suffering, and often revision surgeries.

A typical knee replacement lasts about 15 years, but many patients with Zimmer NexGen knee replacement devices find their knee replacements failing often within just a few years.
