Motorcycle accidents can change your life in a split second. One moment you’re riding down U.S. 19, and the next you’re lying on the pavement wondering what just happened. When cars hit motorcycles, riders almost always get the worst of it.

According to Florida’s 2025 crash data, the state recorded 8,800 motorcycle crashes that year. Out of those, 559 riders died and over 7,500 were injured. In Pasco County alone, we saw 238 motorcycle crashes with 24 fatalities in 2025. When you’re on two wheels, you don’t have airbags or a metal cage protecting you. One careless driver texting at a red light or not checking their mirror can cause injuries that affect you for the rest of your life.

If you’ve been hurt in a motorcycle crash, you need someone who actually understands what riders go through. At The Ruth Law Team, we’ve spent over 40 years fighting for injured motorcyclists across Florida. Whether you need a personal injury attorney or a motorcycle accident attorney, our team has recovered millions for accident victims throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Consultations are free, and you never pay us unless we win your case. Call The Ruth Law Team today at (888) 345-5849 to speak with a dedicated New Port Richey motorcycle accident attorney.

We talked to Amy Catledge after the accident. We gave The Ruth Law Team the go-ahead to represent us. The car accident was in Nov. 2022. A settlement was reached in Jan. 2023 which was earlier than I thought it would be. Patti Olson worked with us and helped us go through some very trying times. It should be noted - Amy was very honest and kept all her promises. Thank you for all your help.

New Port Richey Motorcycle Accident Attorney

Why Motorcyclists Get Hit So Often in New Port Richey

Riding in New Port Richey means dealing with some seriously dangerous roads. U.S. 19 is packed with distracted drivers, aggressive lane changers, and people making sudden turns without looking. State Road 54 and Grand Boulevard aren’t much better during rush hour.

The biggest problem? Drivers simply don’t see motorcycles. Your bike takes up maybe a third of the space a car does. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most motorcycle crashes happen because the car driver never saw the bike coming.

When a car hits another car, both drivers often walk away bruised but okay. When a car hits a motorcycle, the rider usually absorbs the full impact and goes flying. You hit the pavement at whatever speed you were traveling, slide across asphalt, get pinned between vehicles, or get thrown into traffic. Helmets help with head injuries, but they can’t stop your body from breaking. This is why working with an experienced motorcycle accident attorney who understands these unique dangers is so critical.

Florida’s weather makes everything worse. Summer afternoon thunderstorms turn roads slick in seconds. Oil slicks, gravel, potholes, and debris that cars roll right over can send a motorcycle sliding. New Port Richey’s mix of local traffic, tourists, and commuters rushing to Tampa creates constant hazards for riders.

The Most Common Ways Motorcyclists Get Hit

Motorcycle crashes follow patterns. Understanding these shows exactly where driver negligence comes into play, whether you’re dealing with a car accident case or a motorcycle-specific claim.

The Left-Turn Crash

This is how most motorcycle accidents happen. You’re riding straight through an intersection with a green light. A car coming from the opposite direction turns left, cutting right across your path. The driver either didn’t see you or completely misjudged your speed.

These crashes happen constantly at busy intersections along U.S. 19 and Main Street. Legally, you have the right of way, but that doesn’t help when a car pulls through an intersection and you end you’re T-boning a car. At The Ruth Law Team, we’ve handled dozens of left-turn crashes and know how to prove the car driver was at fault. This type of collision often results in head-on collision scenarios where the motorcyclist takes the full impact.

The Lane Change Sideswipe

You’re cruising in your lane when suddenly a car starts merging right into you. They never checked their blind spot. Now you’re getting sideswiped, forced toward the shoulder, or knocked into another lane. Many of these incidents also involve commercial vehicles or trucks that have even larger blind spots.

Getting Rear-Ended at Lights

You’re sitting at a red light, completely stopped, when someone slams into you from behind. It’s often someone distracted by a phone or looking down for just a second too long. The impact can throw you forward, sometimes straight into the intersection. These rear-end accidents can cause serious back injuries and neck trauma. The worst part? You did nothing wrong.

The Door Prize

This happens often in downtown New Port Richey or anywhere with street parking. You’re riding past parked cars when someone opens their door right into your path. Zero time to react. Even “minor” door accidents cause broken bones and serious road rash. These types of incidents often fall under parking lot accident claims when they occur in commercial areas.

Road Hazards

Potholes, loose gravel, uneven pavement, and debris affect motorcycles completely differently than cars. A car hits a pothole and maybe their tire takes a beating. A motorcycle hits the same pothole and the rider could lose control entirely. If poor road maintenance caused your crash, you might have a premises liability claim against the government or private entity responsible.

Distracted and Impaired Driving

Texting, scrolling, adjusting a GPS, or even grabbing a drink can pull a driver’s attention off the road in an instant. The CDC has warned that distracted driving kills thousands of people every year, and riders often pay the highest price because drivers aren’t looking for motorcycles in the first place. Add alcohol or drugs to the mix and it gets even worse. Impaired drivers drift, misjudge distance, and react too late, and a motorcyclist has no metal frame or airbags to soften that impact.

Injuries Motorcyclists Face After Crashes

Let’s be real. Motorcycle accident injuries are almost never minor. When you go down on a bike, your body takes the full impact. Our New Port Richey personal injury lawyers have seen firsthand how devastating these injuries can be.

  1. Head injuries and concussions: Even with a helmet, your brain can get rattled. Severe traumatic brain injuries affect how you think, move, and remember things. Some riders are never the same.
  2. Broken bones: Arms, legs, collarbones, ribs, wrists, ankles. Motorcycle crashes break bones fast. Sometimes it’s compound fractures requiring surgery, pins, plates, and months of physical therapy. Hip and pelvis fractures are particularly serious.
  3. Spinal injuries: Your spine is incredibly vulnerable. Impact can fracture vertebrae or damage the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries and paralysis can mean life in a wheelchair. These injuries change everything about how you live and work.
  4. Road rash: Sliding across pavement can tear through skin and muscle, sometimes down to bone. Severe cases require skin grafts and multiple procedures. The scarring can be permanent and extensive.
  5. Leg and foot injuries: Your legs are exposed when you ride. They often take direct impact or get crushed. Broken legs, shattered ankles, crushed feet, and even amputations happen in serious crashes.
  6. Internal injuries: Blunt force trauma can cause internal bleeding, punctured lungs, or ruptured organs. These might not be obvious right after the crash,  which is why immediate medical care matters..
  7. Neck and whiplash injuries: The sudden impact often causes severe whiplash injuries and neck trauma that can lead to chronic pain and limited mobility.

At The Ruth Law Team, we know how much these injuries can take from your life. We’ve secured multi-million-dollar recoveries for riders with catastrophic injuries.

Florida Helmet Laws and How They Affect a Claim

Florida law starts with a simple rule, riders and passengers are supposed to wear a helmet. However, If you are 21 or older, you can legally ride without a helmet only if you are covered by an insurance policy that provides at least $10,000 in medical benefits for motorcycle crash injuries.

Here’s where it matters in an injury case. Insurance companies often try to turn “no helmet” into a discount on your claim. Even when their driver caused the crash, they may argue that certain injuries would have been less severe if you had been wearing protective headgear. That argument does not erase negligence, but it can turn into a fight about damages, especially for head and brain injuries.

A clear way to think about it is this. Liability is about who caused the collision. Helmet use is usually argued as a damages issue, meaning what injuries were made worse, and by how much. We focus on the evidence and the medical proof so the blame stays where it belongs.

How Florida’s Insurance System Hurts Motorcyclists

Florida’s insurance laws are especially bad for motorcycle riders. Understanding these rules affects how much compensation you can get. Whether you’re working with a car accident attorney or a motorcycle accident attorney, these laws apply the same way.

No PIP Coverage for Bikes

Cars in Florida must carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. It pays medical bills and lost wages right away, no matter who caused the crash. Except motorcycles are completely left out. If you ride in Florida, PIP doesn’t cover you at all.

That coverage gap matters from the moment you leave the scene. If you’re hurt in a crash, you need a way to pay for treatment while your civil claim works through the insurance process — and that process can take time. When you evaluate your insurance coverage, Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage should be considered. Motorcyclists can carry MedPay coverage on their own policy. MedPay pays your medical bills up to your policy limit regardless of fault, giving you a first-party coverage path that doesn’t depend on proving the other driver was responsible. It won’t replace what you can recover from the at-fault driver, but it can keep medical care moving while your case is being built.

If you didn’t carry MedPay, your health insurance may cover crash-related treatment, though you’ll want to notify your attorney before making statements to any insurer. Either way, your path to full compensation — lost income, pain and suffering, and damages beyond medical bills — runs through the at-fault driver’s liability insurance.

You Need the Other Driver’s Insurance

Since PIP won’t help and if you don’t carry MedPay or health insurance coverage, your remaining option is the at-fault driver’s liability insurance. The problem is, Florida only requires $10,000 in property damage coverage. Bodily injury coverage is optional. That means plenty of drivers have little or no insurance to cover your injuries.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage Saves You

The best protection is your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. This steps in when the at-fault driver doesn’t have enough insurance. Every rider should carry as much UM/UIM as they can afford.  According to the Insurance Information Institute, 20.6% of Florida drivers — more than one in five — have no auto insurance at all, making UM/UIM coverage one of the most important protections a rider can carry.

Insurance Companies Blame Riders

Insurance companies do everything possible to avoid paying. One of their favorite tactics is to blame the motorcyclist. They’ll claim you were speeding or riding recklessly. They’ll often use the fact that you ride at all as evidence that you’re a risk-taker.

This is nonsense, but it works on juries who don’t understand motorcycles. That’s why you need an attorney who defends riders against these unfair accusations.

Call us at (888) 345-5849 or contact us online to schedule a free consultation today.

The “Motorcycle Bias” Problem and How We Counter It

Some people hear “motorcycle” and assume the rider must have done something wrong. That’s why insurance companies lean into the same accusations over and over. They will claim you were speeding, weaving, or “came out of nowhere.” They may point to loud pipes, a sport bike, or even your riding gear and try to paint a reckless rider story that has nothing to do with what actually happened.

This is why we build motorcycle cases from proof, not opinions. We look at scene measurements, lane widths, sight lines, skid marks, and the exact point of impact. We study vehicle damage angles to show how the collision occurred. We track down witnesses early, because memories fade fast. We also move quickly to secure nearby business footage, traffic cameras, and dashcam video before it gets deleted. When the facts are disputed, we can bring in crash reconstruction to explain speed, timing, and visibility in a way that is easy to understand.

Fault matters in Florida. Fault matters in Florida. Under the state’s modified comparative negligence law, your compensation is reduced by whatever percentage of fault is assigned to you — and if an insurance company successfully argues you were more than 50% at fault, you are barred from recovering anything at all.

What Your Motorcycle Accident Case Is Worth

Every motorcycle crash is different. The value depends on how badly you were hurt, how the crash affects your life, and what insurance coverage is available.

  • Medical bills: Everything from ambulance rides to surgeries to future medical care. We work with medical experts to calculate lifetime costs.
  • Lost income: Every penny of wages you missed because of the crash, including overtime and bonuses.
  • Future earning capacity: If you can’t do your old job anymore, you can recover compensation for that lost future income.
  • Your motorcycle and gear: Your bike, helmet, jacket, boots, and damaged gear. Custom parts should be accounted for too.
  • Pain and suffering: Compensation for physical pain you endured and will continue to endure.
  • Emotional trauma: PTSD, anxiety, depression. Some riders can never get back on a bike because the fear is too overwhelming.
  • Loss of enjoyment: When injuries prevent you from doing things you love, that’s compensable.
  • Permanent disability: Paralysis, amputations, and chronic pain significantly increase claim value.

No two motorcycle cases are worth the same amount. Cases with limited injuries and clear liability tend to settle for less, while crashes involving catastrophic injuries, permanent disability, or wrongful death can result in significantly larger recoveries. The only way to know what your case is actually worth is to talk to an attorney who can evaluate the specific facts.

Recent Motorcycle Accident Results

Our track record speaks for itself. While every case is unique, here are examples of recoveries we’ve secured:

  • $63 million for the family of a man killed on his motorcycle by a negligent driver
  • $1.3 million for a motorcyclist with severe wrist and hand injuries requiring multiple surgeries
  • $800k to a man’s family after he died due to a motorcycle collision with road debris

These results show what’s possible with aggressive, experienced legal representation, whether it’s a fatal accident case or serious injury claim.

What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash

The moments after a crash are critical. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Get medical help immediately. Even if you think you’re okay, go to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital or the nearest ER. Adrenaline masks serious injuries.
  2. Call 911. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office or Florida Highway Patrol will document the scene. This official report becomes important evidence.
  3. Document everything. If you can, take photos of all vehicles, road conditions, your injuries, skid marks, and debris.
  4. Collect information. Get names, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, and insurance details from everyone involved. Get witness contact info too.
  5. Don’t admit fault. Stick to facts when talking to police. Anything you say can be used against you.
  6. Notify your insurance. Report the accident, but be careful what you say. Don’t give recorded statements without talking to an attorney first.
  7. Keep all records. Save every medical bill, prescription receipt, pay stub, and insurance communication.
  8. Contact an attorney immediately. The sooner you have representation, the better. We can start investigating before evidence disappears.
