The FDA (US Food & Drug Administration) has issued a safety announcement about Invokana, which is part of a class of medications called SGLT2 inhibitors. This warning was made because there have been a significant number of adverse effects reported.

“FDA warns that SGLT2 inhibitors for diabetes may result in a serious condition of too much acid in the blood.”

In addition to the danger of serious cardiac problems, the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has also issued a warning specifically about Invokana. In that report, no fewer than 457 reports of serious adverse events related to kidney complications from Invokana were identified during the initial year the drug was on the market. Specifically, Invokana problems involved dehydration, kidney failure, kidney impairment or problems with kidney stones, hypersensitivity, urinary tract infections, and abnormal weight loss.

While the FDA has yet to order a general recall of these products, doctors and lawyers across the country have begun to suggest the detrimental effects of SGLT 2 inhibitors may pose a greater risk than the type 2 diabetes they’re meant to treat. Even though the FDA has not recalled the drugs and initially gave them its approval, claims by people injured by this class of drug may not be prevented. We are investigating whether or not the makers knew or should have known of the danger the drug posed to the people using it.  While any litigation may take years and millions of dollars to complete, the payouts are generally quite significant and often result in the cessation of the sale and production of drugs proven to be more dangerous than helpful, thus improving the overall quality of the U.S. drug market.
