Xarelto: The “Safe” Alternative to Warfarin and Coumadin

The makers of Xarelto claim that they have found a “safe” alternative to other blood thinners (such as warfarin or Coumadin) that requires no regular blood monitoring. However contrary to the manufacturer’s claims, the drug is far from safe and may cause serious side effects.

Xarelto carries the risk of side effects such as hemorrhage and internal bleeding. However, unlike other blood thinners, it DOES NOT have an antidote that will reverse bleeding. The drug may cause serious side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding, cerebral bleeding, or rectal bleeding, which can lead to hospitalization or death. This is why more than 6,000 individuals (and growing) have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers and marketers of Xarelto (Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Janssen) after experiencing these harmful side effects. Furthermore, the Plaintiff claims the manufacturers hid the danger of uncontrolled bleeding and engaged in misleading advertising. These lawsuits have been filed in a multi-district litigation (MDL) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

In February of 2017, the first bellwether trial is expected to start. Bellwether cases, selected by Plaintiffs’ and Defendants’ attorneys, are commonly used in MDLs and are designed to try widely contested issues. These cases are intended to be representative of the larger group of cases, and hopefully will help facilitate a settlement of the majority of the cases.
