On Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013, a 14 year old boy was critically injured when he was hit by a car while attempting to cross U.S. 19. According to Clearwater police, the boy crossed the southbound lanes, hopped over a barrier and entered the northbound lanes, where he was hit. He was not in a crosswalk when the collision occurred. To date, police have not released his name or any other details.
In a 2010 survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it was found that 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, and another 70,000 pedestrians were injured. This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 2 hours, and a pedestrian injury every 8 minutes. Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash on each trip.
Though these accidents account for only about 13 percent of all traffic deaths, they are significant. Nearly three-fourths of all pedestrian accidents happen in an urban setting. They happen in all weather conditions, but nearly 70 percent happen at night.
Another issue in many pedestrian accidents is where the pedestrian is walking. You are far less likely to be hit by a car if you are walking on the sidewalk. Walking on the street significantly increases your risk.
This tells us that you can work to prevent being the victim of such an accident by avoiding walking around at night or, at the least, making yourself very visible. Wearing bright and light colored clothing and making sure car-drivers see you is crucial in keeping yourself safe while walking around.
Doing what you can to avoid a pedestrian accident could mean the difference between life and death, quite literally.
