If you had the potential to save a life each day, would you? Most of us would. The good news is YOU CAN— if you choose to look twice for motorcycles. As Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to remind everyone who operates a motor vehicle to do their part in keeping our roadways safe.

Preventable Accidents

Those driving vehicles such as cars, trucks, and SUVs typically are the ones at fault when it comes to collisions with motorcycles, often as a result of turning left directly in front of the motorcycle. Distracted driving, either by texting, calling, eating or changing the radio station, is often to blame. Motorcycles can seemly appear out of nowhere, so always be sure to look twice to avoid preventable accidents.

Tips for Motorcycle Riders

As the operator of the motorcycle, you also have a duty to remain vigilant about your own safety.

  • Make yourself known. Use reflective tape and gear to ensure you are visible to drivers. Do your best to stay out of other motorists’ blind spots, and leave plenty of space between yourself and the car in front of you.
  • Wear a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet. We can’t emphasize this enough. In 2014, 41{7b0f9a613a6857e14562fa0a1b26cd067b995d91d673512a1ec838e971e7f3c9} of those fatally injured while riding a motorcycle were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Helmets save lives!
  • We’re sure we don’t have to say it, but do not drink and drive. 43{7b0f9a613a6857e14562fa0a1b26cd067b995d91d673512a1ec838e971e7f3c9} of riders who were killed in single-vehicle crashes in 2013 had a blood alcohol content level of .08{7b0f9a613a6857e14562fa0a1b26cd067b995d91d673512a1ec838e971e7f3c9} or higher. Even worse, 65{7b0f9a613a6857e14562fa0a1b26cd067b995d91d673512a1ec838e971e7f3c9} of those killed in single-vehicle crashes on weekend nights were at or above the legal limit of intoxication. Furthermore, DUIs cost thousands of dollars and can result in higher insurance rates, loss of license, and jail time.
  • Ride at a safe speed. Avoid approaching vehicles at a high rate of speed, as it could cause the other driver to react suddenly and dangerously.

Accidents claimed the lives of more than 4500 motorcyclists in 2014. Thankfully, this was a 2.3 percent decrease from 2013. Share the road. Motorcycles have a right to be on the roadways just as much as any other legal driver. If you do ride a motorcycle, don’t let the next injury or fatality be yourself.
