Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend responsibly

As the holiday weekend fast approaches, many of us will set out on the road for the beach, family, or a mini-vacation. Travel always presents challenges: from packing to wrangling children and navigating the congested roadways, driving and flying can be a very stressful ordeal. Here are a few tips to help make your weekend travel plans a little less stressful:

  • Budget a little extra time for unanticipated delays. As Memorial Day weekend travelers take to the roads in their millions, travel headaches are bound to happen and congestion will occur. Give yourself a few extra minutes to get wherever you’re headed this weekend.
  • As always, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Memorial Day weekend usually has one of the highest instances of DUIs of any weekend of the year. If you plan on celebrating with alcohol, designate a driver and always drink responsibly.
  • Have an alternate route planned out. Delays and traffic collisions will happen this weekend, which can mean blocked roadways and closed bridges. If you plan on going to our beaches this weekend, know where you’re headed and know the other possible routes on and off the beach.

Outside of travel headaches, Memorial Day weekend can be one of the best weekends of the year, especially for young people. But as you head to the beach, the bar, or just a backyard BBQ, it is important to remember to stay safe out there and to stay hydrated. Heatstroke and sunstroke can be a real killer and, despite how refreshing they may be, most of those alcoholic beverages you’re consuming actually dehydrate you. So do yourself (and your hangover) a favor and try to mix in plenty of water with those alcoholic drinks and perhaps you can avoid a more serious injury!
