Go ahead and buy, but don’t fly before you take this step!

It’s new and it’s true. Effective Dec 21, 2015, all drones—read that ALL drones weighing more than .55 lbs—must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA has set up a great website with easy to understand guidelines and very clear instructions for the whole process.

Just go to : https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/register_drone/

If you already have a drone that qualifies, you have until February 19, 2016, to get it registered. If you’ve bought or receive one as a Christmas gift, you’ll need to register it on the website before you fly. Because of the increased prevalence of drones both as recreation and also in commercial use (think real estate marketing, sportscasting, land management and—yes—maybe soon Amazon delivery), there are very real safety and privacy issues.

The fee to register is only $5 (which you may get refunded if you register before January 20, 2016) and the whole process should only take 5 minutes tops.

We’re big fans of these cool gadgets…yup, I admit it’s on my wish list and I hope a certain someone is reading this…so get with the program and put your drone in the registration zone.
