Caramel Apples linked to at least 4 deaths

December 25th the FDA issued a safety alert to healthcare professionals notifying them of an outbreak of listeriosis from prepackaged caramel apples.  As of December 18th, 29 people had been hospitalized and 4 deaths had been reported.

Listeriosis is a serious bacterial infection in humans and can be fatal in 20% of the cases.

Happy Apple Company issued a recall of its caramel apples because of the potential for contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
