The “silent generation” refers to many of our friends and loved ones who were born between the mid-1920’s and the 1940’s. The silent generation–beloved friends, parents and grandparents–have shaped who we are and to a large extent who we will become.

At a certain point in life, we all realize our parents or grandparents need a little bit of extra help. Often times a family must make the gut-wrenching decision to help their loved one move from a home they lived in their entire life to a nursing home facility. This decision can be costly–both financially and emotionally. When we choose a nursing home, we trust the facility will provide the care and comfort our loved one needs. The majority of nursing home facilities in our area provide excellent care, but unfortunately, some facilities put profits over the health and well-being of our families.

It frustrates and utterly shocks me when I see our loved ones harmed by the nursing homes we trust to protect them. The nursing home facilities at fault are often understaffed or have improperly trained staff. In this work environment, our loved ones can suffer catastrophic injuries and unfortunately even death. The most common injuries we see as a result of nursing home negligence are severe bed sores and broken bones from unnecessary falls. Unfortunately, a large majority of these injuries come at the hands of the same “repeat offender” facilities.

Over the past 35 years, our law firm has been seeking justice on behalf of those injured by nursing home negligence. If you or a loved one is considering moving into a nursing home, please call us so we can share our experience and help you understand what we have learned about nursing homes.

Here are a few tips when making this decision:

  • Interview at least three nursing home facilities in your area
  • Make sure you visit the nursing home in person
  • Talk to the nursing home’s residents–ask them if they receive the care and attention they deserve and if they are happy at the facility
  • Ask the nursing home facility if they have had any claims or lawsuits alleging negligence brought against them in the past 5 years
  • Ask the nursing home about their liability insurance. Nursing home laws have changed and we see many facilities carry little or no insurance to protect your loved one in the event of injury (This is very important–please call us if you have questions)

As the old saying goes “an ounce of prevention…” Careful consideration can help ensure your loved ones safety. We encourage you to research the nursing homes you are considering and please call us if you have any questions.

It is our sincere hope the nursing home we entrust with our friends and families treat them with love and care they deserve. We owe our loyalty and unconditional love to the silent generation because without them, none of us would be where we are.
