Peloton has recalled all of its Tread and Tread+ and treadmills as of May 5, 2021, due to the potential for injury or death.  The recall includes approximately 125,000 treadmills and was issued after multiple reports of injuries and at least one six year-old child’s death.

Peloton’s Tread and Tread+ are interactive treadmills, broadcasting both live and recorded classes for walkers and runners on a high-definition touchscreen.  In April 2021, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged customers with small children and pets to cease use of the machine. The consumer protection agency stated they could become entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the treadmill. The CPSC says it has received at least 72 claims of people, pets and objects being pulled or stuck under the machine. The reports also include 29 instances of abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations. Initially, Peloton refused to pull its treadmills off the market.  Peloton originally stated there was “no reason” to stop using the machine and called the claims “inaccurate and misleading.” At the time, the company stated that instructors were reminding users of safety precautions at the beginning of class.

Now, Peloton’s CEO, John Foley, is apologizing.  He states the company “should have engaged more productively with [the Consumer Product Safety Commission] from the outset. For that, we apologize.”   Foley also said that Peloton will work with the CPSC to “set new industry safety standards for treadmills.”

Peloton Lawsuits

Johnson Fistel, LLP has announced their attorneys filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of shareholders of Peloton Interactive, Inc.  Shareholders who purchased stock in Peloton between September 11, 2020, and April 16, 2021, are included in the lawsuit.  The lawsuit alleges the following:

  • Peloton failed to disclose that Peloton’s treadmills caused a serious safety threat to pets and small children.
  • Peloton was aware of the safety issue(s) at hand but did not recall the equipment.
  • The CPSC had warned users could be injured if they lost balance.  Peloton knew about this.
  • Peloton’s statements about its business and operations were false and misleading

Peloton offers its customers a refund for those who wish to return their treadmill(s).  You can read Peloton’s full statement about the recall here.
