Today the Unites States Food and Drug Administration released a public safety announcement with updated warnings for the drug mefloquine hydrochloride.  Mefloquine is an orally administered drug used to treat and prevent malaria.

Neurological side effects can occur at any time and may last from several months to permanent effects.

Side effects can include:

  • loss of balance
  • dizziness
  • ringing in the ears

Psychiatric effects can include:

  • having hallucinations
  • feeling anxious
  • depression
  • feeling mistrustful

Patients should watch for these side effects and contact their prescribing doctor immediately.
