General Motors recently recalled 1.6 million cars due to a faulty ignition switch. The recalled models include Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac Solstices, Saturn Sky, Ion, Cobalt, and Pontiac G5 models. The faulty ignition switch can result in the disablement of the vehicle’s safety system which can cause the vehicle’s airbags not to deploy when needed. Recent numbers indicate that as many as 303 deaths could have been caused by this defect.

Raw data and a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that General Motors knew of this problem for years and did not take timely steps to remedy the situation.
