We see them in convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores everywhere. The bright neon cans particularly stand out among bottles of water and popular brands of soda. Energy drinks are a multi-billion dollar industry, appealing to a sleep-deprived nation. But they are also causing adverse health effects, particularly among young consumers.

A Tasty Treat or A Dangerous Drink?

While the amount of caffeine in energy drinks can vary greatly, energy they are generally heavily sweetened and laden with artificial flavors and preservatives, making it easier and more attractive to consume large amounts in a short period of time. Furthermore, some of these artificial ingredients are thought to be dangerous when mixed with large amounts of caffeine, especially if the consumer has a pre-existing heart condition.

Appealing to Younger Audiences

On its website, Monster boasts that it doesn’t spend money on typical advertising, rather, it uses well-known athletes and musicians to market the brand to children and teens— who also happen to be those who are more susceptible to the negative effects of caffeine. For most people, moderation is key. However, just one 16-ounce can of Bang energy drink brings most healthy adults to the daily recommended limit for caffeine, not to mention it causing a spike in blood pressure. But for adolescents, doctors recommend no more than 100 milligrams of caffeine per day.

Monster calls itself “A lifestyle in a can,” stating, “…all our guys walk the walk in action sports, punk rock music, partying, hangin’ with the girls, and living life on the edge.” Unfortunately, this rings a bit too true for consumers whose lives have been put in danger after drinking these beverages. Common side effects of consuming energy drinks in larger quantities (typically more than one) include:

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Cardiac arrhythmia/heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Chest pain

Other more serious problems may include:

  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Brain damage
  • >Cardiac arrest

Even worse, dozens of deaths have been linked to energy drinks, including Monster, 5-Hour Energy, and Rockstar.
