Another popular impotence drug has become the subject of complaints against its manufacturer. Reports indicate that, like Viagra, Cialis (tadalafil) may increase the risk for melanoma, an aggressive and sometimes deadly form of skin cancer.

While Viagra and Cialis are competitors, both are facing similar lawsuits. The claims against Eli Lilly & Co., the manufacturer of Cialis, allege the erectile dysfunction drug increases the risk for invasiveness of melanoma. Taking the drug may interfere with the body’s ability to counter the spread of this cancer. Plaintiffs claim the manufacturer failed to warn men who take Cialis of this increased risk. Additionally, reports indicate Cialis may cause loss of vision.

Both Cialis and Viagra work by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5. However, studies indicate melanoma is more invasive when this particular enzyme is inhibited, allowing the cancer to more aggressively spread throughout the body. In fact, a June 2014 JAMA Internal Medicine study showed that men who took Viagra were 84% more likely to develop melanoma over a 10-year span.

Those of us who live in Florida encounter year-round exposure to the sun and should take extra care in watching for signs of skin cancer. Cancer.org says the ABCDE rule is a useful guide in keeping an eye out for melanoma. You should see your dermatologist if you notice any of the following:

A – Asymmetry. If one half of a mole does not match the other.
B – Border change. If the edges of a mole are blurred, irregular, or ragged.
C – Color change. If the color changes or is irregular.
D – Diameter change. If the spot is larger than about ¼ inch, or the size of a pencil eraser.
E – Evolution. If the mole evolves in size, shape or color.
